A unique feature of the Strange S60 (Dana style housing) are the adjuster nuts than can be used to set spool preload and backlash instead of using metal shims. Remove the adjuster nuts before cleaning. At Strange Engineering they clean the housings in an industrial parts washer to help remove any dirt, oil, or metal chips that could easily screw up the setup and or operation of the rear end assembly at the absolutely worst time.
This job can also be accomplished at home using an aerosol can of brake cleaner, shop towels, and some good old fashion elbow grease. Blow dry the complete unit using compressed air once you have removed all foreign matter from the unit.
Just as the housing needed to be cleaned and prepped, the ring gear and spool requires some attention. The spool is simply wiped clean to remove any oil or dirt, while the
backside of the ring gear gets scuffed with an 80 grit honing stone and mineral spirits to ensure any burrs or high spots will not affect the setup.
This can also be accomplished with a fine flat file. The ring gear bolt holes should also be thoroughly cleaned out as any contamination can affect ring gear bolt torque measurements. Spray with brake cleaner to clean and blow dry.
