This is the 2008 Trailer Toad hooked up behind my motor home and in front of my 26' 17,000 lb stacker trailer. It has worked great all year and will soon be replaced by the new 2009 "Pro-Series Trailer Toad". Without the Trailer Toad I would have put so much stress on the hitch, frame, rear suspension and tires it would have been like throwing money away on the new coach.
This is a view of the rear of a Trailer Toad. This shows the very strong bar-stack material used to bolt the hitch head to and shows where the trailer plug in could be mounted. Everything on the Trailer Toad is heavy-duty. 1/2" plate for rear plate and top plates. .250" wall tubing for frame and 1/2" plate for drawbar attachment point.

The Trailer Toad fits between the receiver hitch on the tow vehicle and the coupler on the trailer. The Trailer Toad slides right into your existing 2”x2’” receiver hitch and requires no fabrication. The Trailer Toad has its own torsion axle suspension to support the trailer tongue weight and isolate that weight and stress from the motor home. There are other units that perform similar functions to the “toad”. Tuff-Tow is one and Pro Mod racer Bill Kuhlman makes one-off custom units that perform the same task as the Toad and  the Tuff-Tow.

Other benefits I and some of my customers have experienced using the Trailer Toad is improved handling due to the Toad’s pivoting axle that eliminates side sway and stabilizes the tow vehicle and trailer by putting a set of tires and suspension between the trailer and tow vehicle. Under hard braking the motor home stays level and stops much better than it would if you had a regular equalizer hitch and the rear of the motor home was pushed down and front rose up in hard braking situations. Besides reducing the load on the motor home the other benefit I noticed the first time I used it is how smooth the overall ride was. No more rattling dishes in the motor home, now more coffee pots flying around on the sometimes less than smooth Interstate highways we all use.

Since taking over the manufacturing responsibilities of the Trailer Toad and having used it for a couple of years now I’ve made some improvements. The original had a capacity of just 2000 lbs tongue weight and 10,000 lb gross trailer weight. The latest model 2009 “Pro-Series Trailer Toad”, referred to as the “Stacker Toad” , can handle 3500 lbs on the tongue and 18,000 gross trailer weight. Tire sizes have evolved as well. Originally the Trailer Toad had 8” tires and wheels but the new 2009 Trailer Toad comes with 15” radial trailer tires.

The Trailer Toad is constructed entirely in the United States. Built with the highest quality steel and components and is designed to take all the abuse that used to be transferred into the motor home’s and trailer’s chassis and to you as the driver towing a swinging and swaying trailer carrying your beloved Family and Racing operation.

So we all have horror stories about towing disasters if we’ve raced more than a couple of years. White knuckle trips through the mountains stopping every couple of hundred miles to check the hitch, tires etc. To help solve this racers have been working on devices similar to the Trailer Toad with varying success and expense. Now after two years of using and abusing the Toad to haul my race car trailer I’ve come to the conclusion that almost everyone needs something like the Toad and for my money it is the best and most affordable solution.
