As the pictures show, I removed quite a bit of material from the counterweights of the crank to get it balanced to less than 1 gram per end. I used a TCI 164 tooth SFI approved flex plate on the rear which is also a 28 oz. unit (part #529628) and will hold up nicely to the expected abuse of 5500 rpm trans.brake launches. Yippee! The balancing is done! On to the block work.
Last month I hot-tanked and jet washed the block and filled the water jackets with Hard Blok filler. Both sides are now full and have been setting up for about two weeks. Previous to ordering my KB Premium Forged pistons I used a dial-bore gauge and determined that a .040” overbore should clean up the well worn cylinder bores. I’m glad I went .040” instead of the more typical .030” but more on that later! The first thing I did after removing the deck plate, Moroso main cap girdle, and main caps was use a deck height measuring tool I purchased a few years ago. This thing is really handy and a time saver! As the pictures are attempting to show, it has a ball shaped end on a anvil that rides in the main saddles of the block and a typical dial indicator on the top end that rides on the deck surface.

Here I am drilling the main oil feeds to 11/32". Afterwards I removed any burrs in the saddles. |

I first set it to “0” with a standard, in this case 8 inches, and then carefully swept across the deck of the block in a cross pattern until the indicator found the lowest reading. It definitely takes some finesse and concentration but once your “in the zone” it works great. After subtracting the indicated reading from the standard of 8 inches I came up with 7.015” on cylinder #1 and 7.006” on #5.
