ADVICE TO THE LOVELORN?
Darr, I just read your "Once and Future Funny Car" column in DRO. Hell, you give better advice than Dear Abby! Way to go!

RIGHT STORY, WRONG TRACK
The story about the Hairy Olds and the farmer’s back yard is true but it didn’t happen at Detroit Dragway, it was at Motor City Dragway in Mt. Clemens on 26 Mile Rd. I was there. I was working for Hurst at the time for Dave Landrith. I was doing the booking for it and the Hemi Under Glass. If you look close I am in the picture at Niagara. We ran the car on Saturday and Sunday after it rained and the track was dirty. As I remember it may have been a NASCAR-sanctioned event.

WAY BACK WHEN
Dave: Great story. I'll bet you didn't know I had Gary's Galpin Ford-sponsored Mustang for a year and then Jimmy Harwood's Wagon Master for the following year back in '78-'79 before Don Garlits, before Race Car Specialties, before Carroll Shelby, before Western Wheel and before American Racing/Parnelli Jones when I had my speed shop in Lancaster, CA, before Strange Engineering, before NHRA, before SEMA and before Clifford Research. WOW! Did you understand that? Good sh*t, man. Good sh*t.

MORE ON IVO’S 4-ENGINE CAR
Didn't Pellegrini drive the car before it was a wagon? I was told recently that on the Ivo farewell tour, after Tom broke his back, the rear axles were removed and the car just moved with the front tires powered. Rick Johnson was the driver at that point.

ATTA BOY, DAVE
Dave, Just a quick note to say "nice article" and I look forward to the next. I have been fortunate to see Ivo's four on many occasions and remember his very last ride (the stiff suspension hurt his back) in the WagonMaster at Goodguys Indy Nationals in ’99. (If memory serves)
Thanks.

IHRA RACE MADE A NEW FAN
I attended the IHRA nats at Milan last weekend. I must say what a great show. We took our NASCAR bus and rented a spot on the guardrail for the weekend. I now can see why NHRA limits the Pro Mods to a few shows, wouldn’t want to offend those (GTO’s and Cobalts..heehee) didn’t they stop making the GTO? That green Daytona is wild; I hated to see it get crashed. It was cool to see Scott Kalitta driving a Funny Car too. I am already planning on going to U.S. 131 for the IHRA race there.
