WHO’S WHINING?
I go along with all of it except maybe the one about whining crew chiefs and track conditions. But I REALLY AGREE WITH THE LAST ONE.

MAKE ROOM FOR SPORT COMPACTS
I think Sport Compact has a definite place in drag racing. Most of the cars people buy today are either 4 or 6 cyl, front wheel drive cars. It's interesting to see how these cars become drag racing cars, and the performance is really amazing. However, I don't think that they will take over drag racing in 10 years. I'd like to see how they'd do in Stock, Super Stock and Comp Elim and maybe even a version in Pro Stock. It would also be interesting to see, for example, a little Honda V6, DOHC, 4 valve per cyl motor on nitro with a blower. If a combo like that can run 6.60's at 214 on alky with a turbo in a door car, what do you think it would do on nitro in a light weight dragster chassis? That I'd like to see!

A WEEK DEFENSE?
Saddam Hussein announced today the grand opening of the Norm Weekly School of Charm. Mister Weekly was quoted as saying, “I am the charm expert and I will punch out anyone who doesn't agree." The school will be located at an undisclosed site in downtown Chicago. Details at www.imright.or.die.com

Re: Just Wondering
Now this is some great constructive questions. Jeff, for the first time you have not made my blood boil. Very good writing.

BACK TO THE BEGINNING
I think NHRA and IHRA need to go back to real drag racing. Weight, cubic inches, carb. A Hot Rod, BHR CHR, A Gas, B Gas, C Gas -- no more rev limiters (sickening), no break out. More people will watch these cars.
I used to race. It is bad to see these cars take off from the starting line just to see them die and take off again. Let’s get back to real racing -- build it to weight and cubic inches and race.

QUESTION
I have a question to ask. Mike Dunn often talks about fuel cars "putting a cylinder out". And obviously, the cylinder is not burning. My question is, what causes it most of the time? It's got to be either ignition or an exhaust valve. Any way to tell from what we see on TV? BTW, Paul Page isn't getting any better.

ANSWER
Steve, the short answer is that the fuel system (supercharger/fuel injection) puts so much fuel and air into the combustion chamber that it literally floods the air gap between the plug electrodes so that there is no spark. As the ignition timing and engine load changes during the run the "hole" will sometime re-light and "pick up" or get ignition. Hope this helps. -- Jeff Burk
