DARRELL RUSSELL CRASH

I have this crash on a TiVo and I watched it many times there is one part of the video with different camera angle that shows the tire completely engulfed in fire -- with a TiVo you can do frame by frame.

After I saw this I called a crew chief from a Top Fuel team and told him of my concerns. He said he looked at the footage also but did not see what I saw. I asked, Do you have a TiVo so you can see frame by frame? He said no but would look at it again and be in touch. When we spoke again he said he called Ray Alley and asked for some still photos of that run. At that point (Alley) said he would send them. After some time never received them, neither one of us were surprised.

This is it in a nutshell: you have track temperature, tire spin creates heat, exhaust flames that go as high as the wing at the start, BUT at over 300 MPH those same flames are now laid back from that speed and when they do that they are -- you guessed it -- on the tires. The video shows this without a doubt.

Most tire failures are on Top Fuel -- why do you think that is?

ANOTHER PAGE TURNER

I have cringed during every broadcast that Paul Page has been the commentator. Last week the Snake showed him up -- too bad he is so busy with his team. I have to turn off the audio most of the time to keep from putting an autographed piston ashtray through the TV. Does anyone at NHRA corporate watch these broadcasts? Does ESPN have any idea how his presence and pitiful performance affects their credibility as "The Leader in Sports?"  Mispronouncing names, referring to Tony Pedregon as "racing the boss" when up against JF and that dull emotionless monotone is inexcusable. If you hear about auditions for 2007 please let everyone know about them.

In response to the beer wagon saga, I have written to Miller to let them know that I will no longer be supporting them due to their decision to leave NHRA. I have told Budweiser they have my business and thanks in the hopes they will continue their support and sponsorship.

Regarding the Sport Compact Series, another painful example of drag racing on TV I had to turn it off and there is no bikini contest could revive that show. With NHRA's effort to become more profitable in the Compton era the "pin" should have been pulled on the SC Series two years ago. Maybe it will just implode when the Xplod sponsorship ends.

Thanks for the great coverage and features and, of course, the space to let us rant. See you in the tower!

Paul Page may not be perfect, he just happens to be a hell of a lot less annoying than Marty Reid. Face it, ESPN's coverage of drag racing just plain sucks. Bring in Bob Frey!!!!!
