STIRRING THE POT?

If I was Ron Capps, I'd send the bill for the fight fine to Marty Reid and the entire ESPN2 on-air crew. Those yahoos would not quit

talking about what should have been a private matter. Marty kept calling Capps "Oscar," as in de la Hoya. The fight did not take place in public.  Nobody outside DSR witnessed it. But, NHRA saw fit to lay a 10 grand fine on Capps.

Again, I have to think if Mr. Reid and ESPN2 had merely reported it once, then left it alone, NHRA would have let Schumacher handle the situation. Instead, NHRA, in an attempt to prevent becoming another NASCAR with fighting drivers, decided to pull a power trip and fined Capps. NHRA is getting beyond absurd.

CORRECTING AN EARLIER LETTER

When the Agent (or Burk) makes a mistake, they correct it...as should I.  In my rambling letter on a few topics I referred to a video I had of an early '80s drag race with Marty Reid and Bob Varsha announcing. Well, a friend of mine with a better memory informed me that it was Bob Jenkins and Larry Nuber of IHRA fame that were on that tape. My apologies to Marty and Bob (damn fine announcers). The video is still funny. So, with due respect, I was in error and apologize to the readers. Don't send any hate mail to the site...or me.

'NO' TO LIVE BROADCASTS

There have been some comments in recent issues about making drag racing more TV friendly by televising races live. I think a great deal more thought must go into this. How can you have a live show when the racers have 75 minutes to get the cars ready for the next race? It's OK in the early rounds when there are two or three other classes running to take up the time, but how about the last two rounds? Two TF races followed by 75 minutes of what? Two FC races and two Pro Stock races?  This isn't the old Friday night drags where you race, then go to the end of the line to race again.

Live TV sounds good, but the devil is in the details. Drag racing is not currently structured for live TV and to make it so will require some really radical thinking outside the box. Lotsa luck.

A FAN OF THE WATER

Thanks for the drag boat coverage. It is nice to see that stuff on here and hopefully you will continue to cover it.

Thanks again.
