Making a welcome return to European action was multi-time NDRS Pro Modified champion and the 2006 FIA Top Fuel Dragster winner Håkan Nilsson. Having imported a 57 Chevy last year that he’s used at domestic level in Scandinavia, Nilsson reacquainted himself with the FIA series (not to mention the trackside photographers on this shake riddled first launch) and qualified eleventh. A first round match up with long time foe Freddy Fagerström went to the pick-up, but hopefully Nilsson will run more events in the near future.

He’s back, and how. Having made a brief appearance at Alastaro in a loaner, Jimmy Ålund (left) got his GTO back from the States in time for the Veidec Festival and dialed in a 6.779/204.56 to qualify low by over a tenth to set the track speed record. Having marked the cards of the championship contenders (among them Michael Callin and Tommy Leindahl being shock non-qualifiers), we’ve no doubt that Ålund will be setting a few more records before the season is out.

The sharp end of Top Methanol Dragster is carrying a very prominent Germanic accent this season. Whilst the Habermann clan appear to have
a lock on the points championship, Peter Schöfer and the Bavarian Thunder team just missed out on the low qualifier points with a 5.450 just being bested by Timo Habermann’s 5.445.
After skipping the round in Finland at the start of the month, Dan Larsen led qualifying in Top Methanol Funny Car, carding the only five of the class with a 5.910 that was someway below what the Dane was expecting. Larsen would be another to rue the missed opportunity to get him back into the points chase with two events left on the schedule.
