D GAS

It was all Bakersfield, Calif., in the final of the D Gas class as young Josh Conrad made his family proud with their 1967 Nova over fellow Chevy racer Chris Kurtis in his ‘68 Nova. Both drivers broke out but Conrad was the least offender at 10.597/123.63 to Kurtis at 10.557/129.22. Tom Easterly’s Mopar set the pace at 10.601.

HOT ROD

In a run what you dial in bracket, it was two local boys being Rob Strong from San Bernadino and Dale Hicks of nearby Etiwanda, Calif., with the win light coming on for Strong’s Chevelle at 10.851, 125.02 mph over Hicks 10.158, 132.45 mph

CLASS

Veteran Mike Smith from San Diego Ca drove his, red white and blue draster to an outstanding 7.066/190.24 to defeat Rich High’s AZ based digger at 7.168/188.91. High was number one qualifier at 7.006, 189.10 mph.

EXTRA

There were a couple of cacklefest cars on hand in Ron Johnson’s Chizler and Mike Kuhl with a John Weibe replica. Both fired up for all the spectators on hand, then Rick McDonald (above) wanted to make a short pass in the Chizler as the Greek is his all time hero. He looked kind of like the Greek as Chris Karamesines was always known for his handling ability. Rick smoked the tires then got out of the groove and looped the AAFD not once but twice, making it a 720 instead of just a 360 -- and believe it or not did not touch a guard rail. Incredible!

Rancho Cucamonga driver Dave Rico put his black Altered upside down at about the 500-foot mark. Dave’s pride was hurt but the team vows to be back after they check out the chassis.
