Nearly 100 past Winternationals Class winner cars, their grey-haired drivers and crewmen came to the 50th to share stories with friends and fans in the Golden 50 Corral.  The Corral was packed for hours with people checking out the vintage diggers, gassers and funnies, and jumping to attention every few minutes by various cars being started up for everyone’s entertainment.

The history, pomp and ceremony heralding the running of the 50th annual NHRA Winternationals was in many ways equaled by the actual racing on the legendary Pomona dragstrip where NHRA hosts its “Big Go West.”

After almost a two-year absence from the Funny Car winners circle, John Force returned and in convincing style. Larry Dixon and Alan Johnson got their first Winternationals victory for the Al-Anabi team in Top Fuel. Mike Edwards proved that no one in Pro Stock is his equal as he continued his absolute domination of that class.  He qualifying number one for the ninth straight time over the past two seasons and had low ET of the meet for Pro Stock in a final round thrashing of Greg Anderson.

Mike Edwards is just starting to make up the holeshot advantage that Greg Anderson had in the Pro Stock finals and motor past him to the win.  (James Drew photo)
