Testing 1…2…

Two weekends of testing for the 52nd March Meet finally met with good weather on only the final Sunday before the big event with nitro cars, gassers and altereds getting as much track time as possible before dark.

Over sixty nitro cars are expected for this year’s event, some teams are making their competition debuts with new chassis and engine combinations, but with so little time prior to Friday’s first round of qualifying there will be plenty of teams arriving at Auto Club Famoso Raceway with little or no test time because of persistent weather issues.
The standout of Famoso nitro testing was Kris Krabill in Gary Turner’s “Pedaler” Plymouth Arrow, who, in Sunday’s final session nailed a 6.032/234.92 with tuner Cory Lee’s “soft” tune-up. Over the winter Lee put together a completely new team after a
couple of key crewmembers left
for other funny car
teams.
Horan and
Swearingen were out to make a
few short squirts before qualifying begins on
Friday, March 5. Horan’s father, Dan Sr., has stepped away from the driver’s seat since his spectacular crash at Famoso last year, but will reportedly debut a new Keith Burgan-built Top Fueler at the March Meet.
Veteran nostalgia funny car racer Dan Horan Jr. showed up at the Patch in livery from new sponsor the "Joe Walla Band American Rock 'N' Roll". Horan said, “This deal is great, it’ll allow me to race at all the Hot Rod Heritage Series events with legendary crew chief Ronnie Swearingen on board and the band will play at all the events as part of the show. This is one of the first big sponsors into nostalgia racing and the Joe Walla Band will be playing at the Saturday night racer’s party here at Famoso Raceway.”  The Joe Walla Band is scheduled to play at Heritage Series stops including Fontana, Boise, Las Vegas, Sacramento, Phoenix and then returning to Bakersfield.
