March Nitro Madness is upon the Burkster - AA/FC

The annual March Meet at Famoso is less than 6 days from starting and the Burkster is starting to get that glint in his third eye that any bartender that serves him will tell you indicates not that he has had one too many barley malts but rather he is in the preliminary stages of  nitro madness. He is a certified nitro funny car junkie!

And he has good reason for the first time in his life he is going to get to experience something not seen in drag racing in almost fifty years:  a 32-car, qualified-field of nitro coupes. Something not witnessed since the early seventies.

So after offering his bias laden odds for the 16-car Top Fuel field at the upcoming March Meet and getting almost no serious hate mail, he’s decided to take his chances by handicapping the Fuel Coupes.
Now as you readers know, the Burkster’s vices are (in order): nitro , adult beverages, gambling, and nitro funny cars. His weakness for these vices is well documented. So, with apologies to the other handicappers -- of which there are two or three -- here are the Burkster’s pilsner-fueled picks for AA/FC.

Oh, and if you should be at the races and want to argue about these picks. I’ll be at the March Meet setting at  about a thousand feet next to Dave Wallace with a wad of dollar bills in one hand, a track dog and margarita (don’t try that at home, kids)  in the other looking for some action.

1. Leah Pruett LeDuc / Plueger & Geiger Mustang    She has driven both quickest and fastest AA/FC ET and speeds ever. If she’s between the pipes of Plueger’s Mustang, she has to be the odds on favorite.      2-1

1a. Driver unknown / LA Hooker Arrow

Clone to the Mustang will run hard no matter who’s behind the wheel. Take both and bet the farm 2-1
2. Kris Krabill / The Pedaler Arrow A West Coast team that traveled to the Midwest to race and lived up to their reputation.  Plenty of parts, top tier tuner, and driver makes this team a favorite. Everyone but tuner, driver and owner being new to team could derail the Pedaler 3-1
3. Paul Romine / Man O’ War ’79 Mustang  2009 DRO AA/FC Challenge series champ. First Midwest “legal” car in fives, showed well at Boise last year. Team wants a West Coast win bad, parts and performance not an issue.  Lack of laps in Funny Car on this track only minus here  3-1
4. Lee Paul Jennings Jr. / Code Red ‘77 Camaro Father and son team are tough. Lee Paul Jr drives and dad’s 250-mph tune-up a plus. Experience racing at Bakersfield makes them favorite if above teams stumble 4-1
5 Josh Crawford / Harry Schmidt’s Blue Max  Mustang Another well funded team that has shown potential. Veteran Bob Brooks calling the tuning shots a bonus 9-2
6. Tim Boychuk  ’77 Firebird Canadian entry has one big bonus: Roland Leong tunes the car. If former IHRA/NHRA Top Fuel, Funny Car driver Boychuk can adjust to AA/FC Leong will supply plenty of power! The Burkster’s parlay pick 5-1

Cick here to print this tip sheet and take it to the races!

7. Chris Bennett / McCain’s Bomb Squad ’73 Duster Solid five-second car comes here with a temporary driver and a new tuner/advisor/driver: Troy Green. Tough to win March Meet with lots of new faces on team 7-1
8. Dan Horan / Mustang

One of original West Coast AA/FC. Car has had a variety of tuners but still has shown the ability to run with the best. Veteran nitro tuner Ronnie Swearingen could make this car a serious threat but there are too many “hitters” to get by at March Meet

10-1
9. Cruz Pedregon / 77 Arrow Driver of “big show” FC has to adjust driving to a car that has 5,000 less horses than his regular car. Nonetheless he can drive a fuel coupe. Bucky Austin is a great driver but this would be his debut as a nitro tuner, will need some racing luck 12-1
10. Mark Sanders / Mr. Explosive  67 Nova Another father and son team except son tunes here. Will come with trailer full of fresh engines, a new cam profile and AJPE Cylinder heads and would sacrifice it all. Have to find a “tenth” to win 12-1
11. Dennis LaCharite / ‘77 Pontiac GTO Big Chief has run solid sub-six second passes. Recently owner LaCharite put big car on diet and took off substantial weight. Can’t ignore possibilities 13-1
12. Nate Bugg / BDS ‘ 76 Vega Budget team got some help when sponsor stepped up. Veteran Aussie nitro tuner Vic Wood excels at making power on little money and parts. Everything has to go their way though 15-1
13. Jack Harris,  AA/FC The “Nitro Sherriff” himself is back in the seat and the Utah Posse is concentrating on racing their flopper only at the March Meet. The Donovan is out replaced by Rodeck power. This team has the knowledge to sit in the Winners Circle at Famoso once again. Donovan-powered car ran close to a five-second pass at Boise. Rodeck must deliver a string of five-second laps to get the team Bakersfield hardware 20-1
