OUTLAW 10.5 STREET

Outlaw 10.5 had a pretty nice turnout of 10 cars. Gary Ross in the Outlaw Racing Engines 2004 Grand Am from Hillbilly Racing, covered the 1320 in 6.931 at 199.23 mph to be the leader of the pack. Doug Sikora’s Jason Petit 396 Ford Mustang has really been coming on lately and put down a fine 6.965/200.65 for #2. Rich Zehring parked his trusty Nova and ran a brand new GTP still with 872 Fulton for power and cranked out a fine 7.084/205.91 just working out the bugs in this new piece.

Greg Seth-Hunter put his awesome 1970 Nova into the fourth spot at 7.093/205.51 while current Champion Ron Weems in the other Outlaw Racing Engine Grand Am was #5 at 7.118/200.38. The immaculate show quality 2007 Chevy Cobalt of Kurtis Tamez of Yakima, Wash., ran a respectable 7.169, 191.70 mph for the sixth spot.

Los Angeles’s Lafayette Williams with NRP turbo Ford for power was right there too at a 7.268/196.07. Ken Topper had his primered ‘49 Ford all the way from Spokane, Wash., and put it in the show at 7.531/152.50 mph for #8. The sponsor of the entire event, Chris Alston Jr., made his first appearance at PSCA in quite some time and had to settle for #9 at 7.732, 209.69 mph. Erik Odom’s brand new ‘67 Camaro filled out the field.

It was upset city in round one of Outlaw as one of the race favorites, Seth Hunter, caught a -.004 light and wasted a fine 7.121/205.63 pass to give a win to Williams’ Mustang which stopped the clocks at 7.280 at 197.08 mph for the win.

Next Kurtis Tamez (above) put out the reigning Champion in the class, Ron Weems, with a great .014 RT coupled up with a 7.199 at 192.93 mph for that win. Weems ran a 7.286 at 178.97 mph.

Ross in the Hillbilly Grand is made it look easy with his win of 7.047/198.47 over newcomer Odom’s immaculate grey Camaro. Topper advanced to the next round by defeating current MPH record holder Zehring with a 7.157/198.00 when Zehring went into tire shake with his new ride and shut off early. Sikora got a single when Alston could not make the call, and what did he do? Only Low ET of the round at 6.959 and 198.35 mph.

Round two started off with Ross and his Trabuco Canyon, CA-based Grand Am singling to advance into the semis. Williams also received a bye run when Topper could not make the call.  Then it was another big upset when Tamez flat out ran Sikora 7.186/193.10 to an off pace 7.290/189.84 mph for Sikora’s Barstow-based Mustang.

Ross advanced into the final round when the brakes would not hold on Williams’ Mustang while Tamez got the bye run and ran his best effort of the night at 7.132/194.13.

It was California versus Washington in the final and both cars had major problems, as Tamez could not get his car to stage properly, while Ross (above) got out of shape. Tamez ran a much quicker 7.170/187.39 but his 2.766 RT literally gave the win to Ross in the other lane at 8.288, 185.23 mph.

As Ross said, “It was not pretty but a win is a win. I’ll take it.”
