Romine ran the table at the KCIR meet for Nostalgia Funny Cars, qualifying his ’79 Mustang to the number one spot with a 5.98 lap right out of the box on Friday night. Doc Halladay’s “Telstar” ’77 Arrow, tuned by Jerry Newman, was right behind running yet another of his famous 6.02 laps. They were followed by Mark Worden in the Stanke family’s “Twin Town Shaker” Arrow at 6.21 and John Dunn’s “Dunn & Gone” ’73 Duster at 6.33.
Only four series-legal cars were on hand for the Friday night session, but Saturday saw Kevin Lennon and defending race champ Greg Jacobsmeyer pull into the KCIR pits.
There were two laps on Saturday for the AA/FC cars, the last of two qualifying rounds and the first round of eliminations. All of the cars that had run the Friday session opted to just do regular maintenance on their cars and sit out the second session, so tuner/driver Jacobsmeyer from St. Louis and Indiana-based Kevin Lennon made their qualifying runs.
Jacobsmeyer, perhaps remembering that he failed to qualify on his one chance two weeks earlier at Cordova, eased his Challenger down track with a 6.597/197.58 as did “bucks down” racer-tuner Kevin Lennon who ran 7.273/108.34 in his ’78 Arrow.
