Pro Mod A winner Rick Distefano squares off against Vern Mills Runner-up Vern Mills

Pro Mod B winner Dennis Radford

Meanwhile, on the other side of the bracket, it was a battle royale (because of the metric system) between fellow Canucks Rick Distefano and Ross Hogenson. Both ran well, but Distefano’s 6.158 @ 229.94 was enough to give him the win, as well as low ET. Distefano and Vern Mills would meet in the finals, and though both man and machine strove valiantly, Distefano’s ’53 Vette ate up Mills’ ’55 Chevy, 6.165 @ 228.81 to 6.337 @ 221.71.

Of course, that was only half the Pro Mod action, as the B field proved to be just as much of a show. Dennis Radford missed making the A field after multiple mechanical problems with his ’70 Duster. Radford didn't let that stop him, battling to eventually face off against and defeat Perry Thry and his ’01 Camaro. Thry ran a respectable 6.754 @ 201.55, but it was no match for Radford’s triumphant 6.169 @ 225.22.

It all comes down to this: Bateman and Austin in the Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car final No hard feelings: Nostalgia Funny Car champ Garret Bateman with friends and family, plus runner-up Bucky Austin

Nostalgia Funny Car is already one of the most exciting classes to watch, and the spectators at Spokane got an eye and an ear-full, not to mention (hopefully) a nose-full as the nitro nostalgia funnies strutted their stuff. Track owner Bucky Austin threw is weight behind it, bringing not one but two Plueger funnies to run along with a party of friends. Todd Lesenko of Cave Creek, Arizona, Mark Sanders of Maple Valley, Washington, and Perry Krinnet and Tom Stevenson, both of Canada, made for a thrilling showdown, but in the end it took one of Bucky’s own employees, Garrett Bateman, to overcome Austin with a blistering 5.889 @ 230.49 versus Austin’s 6.030 @ 230.17.

Of course we couldn’t forget the Sportsmen, as Buff Kobs from nearby Coeur De Alene, Idaho took top honors in Bike/Sled over hometown boy Brett Hordeman of Otis Orchard, Washington. Hordeman ran an 8.854 @ 133.25 to Kobs’ winning 8.052 @ 136.66.
