The next match up would pit Ed Thornton’s twin turbo Vette up against Goodguys president Marc Meadors in his BAE supercharged ‘69 Camaro Z-28. They both left the line together and both got on and off the throttle as both cars shook the tires but Thornton took the win light driving away with a 6.691/216 to Meadors’ trailing 6.922/212.
Bob Griffith from Seal Beach, Calif., put Marty Baltzell’s Pontiac Firebird back into the trailer as Baltzell had severe tire shake off the starting line and could only watch Griffith drive away in his blown Dodge Hemi-powered Viper to a 6.478 at 214.11 mph.
Hairston’s twin turbo Pontiac and John Mihovetz’s ‘Accufab’ twin turbo small block modular Ford-powered Mercury Cougar were the next pair. Hairston put a holeshot on Mihovetz, but his 6.680 at 215 mph was not enough to hold off the quicker 6.608 at 220 mph of Mihovetz, who caught the goat of Hairston. Hairston had set the Top Speed mark of 228 mph during qualifying. |
Griffith had former car owner Kirk Kuhns helping the team with tune up decisions.
Next up was number-six qualifier Kelly Bluebaugh, who had a rear-end housing cost him not making the first round at the previous race at Auto Club Dragway. Kelly wanted to show the fans that he liked putting on a show as he laid down the longest burnout of first round when he matched his Chevy Monte Carlo with WFO power up against the blown Hemi in the Maggio Drilling Corvette. It was pretty much over for the Corvette as Maggio went into tire shake and started to get sideways at the 200-foot mark and he watched Bluebaugh turn on the win light running a 6.547 at 215.96 mph.
