DiabloSport EFI Renegade provided what can only be described as, “One hell of a show,” with a slew of bumper-dragging wheel-stands throughout the weekend Larry Hourcle came out on top of the nine-car field after three rounds of qualifying in his former NMCA Street Race car, with an 8,52 at 161 miles per hour. Eliminations were insane as car after car pointed at the sky each round, and three-time class champion Brian Mitchell ran the quickest pass in Renegade history, crossing the stripe in 8.38 seconds to advance him to the final round, where h faced Bad Bart Tobener. Mitchell ran an 8.55 to take the win over Tobener’s off-pace 8.89.
Edelbrock Hot Street is always good for some extremely close racing and wild on-track action. The top half of the field were all qualified within one tenth of each other, with Robbie Blankenship sitting atop the hill with a stout 8.64 at 155 miles per hour. On Sunday Max Gross made a surprising appearance in the lanes after a nasty fuel fire scorched part of the car on Saturday. He made it to the semifinals before he was sent packing by Blankenship’s 8.59-second pass, which is the first of its kind in Hot Street. As a result of that win, it was an all-Roush final round, with Blankenship facing off with the “New” 1972 Maverick of Don Bowles. Bowles got a serious holeshot on Blankenship and was on a killer 8.66 pass when Blankenship ran into issues and slowed, allowing Bowles his first trip to the winner’s circle in only two appearances in Hot Street.
Lately, BFGoodrich Drag Radial has been the Jason Lee show. This weekend was no different as he came out of the gate swinging hard and took the top spot early on with an 8.10 at 174 miles per hour. Sunday eliminations saw a handful of low eight-second passes, with the quickest all belonging to Lee, which ensured his spot in the final round after three round-wins. Making it to the final to face Lee was class-newcomer Ken Ewer. Ewer had shown 8.20 potential earlier in the day, but only mustered an 8.42, which was no match for another 8.10 pass from Lee for the win.
