Halsey qualified #2 and set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.869 seconds and 243.99 mph, showing that his ’68 Camaro would have been up to stiffer competition.

The Mike Janis team started off on the good foot, grabbing the pole position with a 3.926-second, 192.85-mph pass. In round one the Aeroquip team stepped up the performance of their Jan-Cen powerplant between the rails of their Dan Page-built Firebird and it paid off big time, setting low elapsed time and top speed of the meet with a 3.733 elapsed time at 203.34 miles per hour. In both the semi-finals and finals Janis squared off with one of his engine customers, Tombstone Tommy Gray and Dwayne Wolfe respectively.
