Second was John Vergotz’s sharp looking ‘68 Camaro (above) from
Erie, PA, with a 6.398 at 217.04 mph. Chris Rini (Carmel, NY) in his 2007
Stratus was third with a 6.402/220.08, followed by Craig Miller (Savannah,
GA) at 6.437/218.69 and two-time winner Tony Christian (Sarasota, FL) at 6.461/209.85.
In Outlaw 10.5, Chuck Ulsch (Clarksville, MD) had more of an advantage over
his closest competition than Rabon had in Super Pro Street. The BAE-powered
Silver 2002 Camaro laid down a 6.450/224.62 that was followed by Tim Lynch
(Woodstock, GA) at 6.592 at a booming 232.31 from his Steve Petty-tuned ‘02
Mustang. Brad Brand (Loganville, GA) was third with a 6.654/224.40 and Bryan
Markiewicz (Clearwater, FL), who changed from his usual Camaro to a 2003 Mustang
that ran a 6.688 at 229.29 mph.
On Saturday blue skies prevailed, as did the Florida heat and humidity. Track temperatures got near 130 degrees.
With 171 cars on the grounds and relatively few delays, the management decided to give those who wanted a fifth qualifying round. As night approached the track still had plenty of heat in it and with the air cooling down, many racers took the opportunity to see if they could better their positions.
Sam Gottier came down from Canterbury, CT, with his ‘71 Chevelle and
held the number one spot in Heavy Street with a 7.14/195.48. He wished there
wasn't a fifth round as number-two man Gary Naughton’s blown ‘67 Camaro from Pipersville, PA, ripped off a 7.92/204.66 to steal the
top spot. Two pairs later Gottier tried to reclaim his number-one position
but could only slightly improve to a 7.132 at 193.88.
In Drag Radial action it was all David Hance as he led the pack with a 7.43/201.13
from his Inwood, New York-based ‘93 Mustang. Mel Nelson’s turbo
2002 Camaro from N. Ft. Myers, FL, was close behind with a 7.48/201.04.
New for this year was Extreme Import. Alex Dieguez of West Palm Beach ran an impressive 7.161/193.27 in his 116-ci turbo ‘82 Toyota to head the eight-car field.
During the World Street Nationals Coby Rabon completly destroyed the Super Pro Street field. If his 6.269/235.31 blast on Friday wasn't enough, he unloaded a super 6.235/237.92 in the first round against number-32 qualifier Greg Denis ((Punta Gorda, FL), who had to take a shot and went .002 red.
Rabon then took out crowd favorite Tony Williams ((Millington, TN) with a 6.295/235.72. The Sandman’s ’69 Camaro trailed at 6.775, shutting down to 177.39 as Rabon sped away.
In the third round Steve King’s Strasburg, VA, ’68 Camaro got out on Raybon, .035 to .077, but it didn't take him long to catch up and take the win with a 6.333/233.92. King slowed to a 7.489/133.01.
