The big fun culminates on Saturday night with trick or treating that takes place in the pit area, with teams “tricking” out their trailers and pit areas. Some teams have even gone to the extent of to turning their haulers into “haunted haulers,’ giving those who dare to enter a genuine good hearted fright. There is a children’s costume contest, a chili feed, then the headliner act on Saturday is Firebird Air Show, which is a wheelstand contest that fills the stands with racers and fans and has never failed to be exciting, leaving fans and competitors something to talk about for years to come. Then to close out the evening there's the always “entertaining” adult costume contest.
This year, for the Air Show sixteen drivers came into the fray in front of a great crowd on a perfect cool and clear autumn night. Two awards are given for the highest and the farthest, in addition to a nice plaque, cash and prizes, this year the winners would take home the first annual Donny Jimm Memorial award. Named after Donny Jimm, a racer from Eastern Idaho who won this event a total of four times in the past driving his 1968 stick shift big block Camaro, who suddenly passed away late last year. In remembrance Donny’s family put together a great package for the awards, including gift certificate to Summit Racing Equipment, a Donny Jimm
Memorial plaque and a very beautiful hand embroidered Native American blanket honoring Donny and his family’s heritage.
This year there were some spectacular runs made, including Dennis Jorgenson in his beautiful teal and white Chevy Vega and Eric Nyborg in Jim Whiteley’s YNOT Racing Bantam Altered.
However the winners this year for the highest wheelstand went to Jamie Den Beston from Loveland, Colorado, and his wild blown ‘70 Camaro and winner for the farthest was Steve Stuart from Happy Valley, Oregon, in his all steel Chevy Chevelle. Both runs were mind-boggling. Many in the crowd and a few who were track side got the impression that Beston might just go over backwards, but was able to keep control of the black Camaro and bring it to terra firma safely.
