Jimmy Stack (Philadelphia, Pa.) took the Super Street category in his ’71 Challenger. His winning pass was 11.110 at 118.86, a little off the index of 10.90 but more than enough as Ryan Roberts (East Meadow, N.Y.) was slow off the start.

Earlier Sunday, Jim Daniels (Bristol, Pa.) took home a prize of $12,666 as he won the HEMI Challenge by beating local David Barton (Robesonia, Pa.) in the final with a pass of 8.284 at 159.53 in his ’68 Dart. Barton fouled on the start. Both cars carried Ray Barton-built engines, giving the Robesonia, Pa.-based company a win-win situation. David Barton is Ray Barton’s son.
This is Daniels’ second HEMI Challenge victory this season and third overall, having won at Maple Grove last year.
Earlier in the day, Daniels ran 8.273 seconds at 159.72 mph in a single, which beat the tentative NHRA Super Stock/A HEMI national record of 8.331 that he set Thursday. However, because of NHRA rules, he couldn’t back it up while running eliminations.
In the semifinals, Daniels faced Bob Wolkwitz (Darien, Conn.). Though Wolkwitz, driving a ‘68 Barracuda, had a slightly better reaction time, Daniels raced past him for a finish of 8.297 at 158.84. Meanwhile, Barton — also driving a ‘Cuda — advanced when Stephen Herbert (Westlakes, La.) fouled at the start.
“This was in Ray’s backyard,” Daniels said. “It’s The Dutch.”
For winning the race and setting a record, Daniels takes home $12,666 in cash and contingency prizes. David Barton had a good payday himself with a $3,700 runner-up payout.
Daniels said he expects to be challenged even more next season as the Barton shop is working on other cars.
“We’re rebuilding for next year,” Daniels said. “(Barton) has other cars right there that can compete with this one. Getting the record and winning made for an awesome weekend.”
