Three Nostalgia Nitro Funny Cars pounded the Vegas quarter mile in perfect weather preparing their combinations for the 51st Annual March Meet. 2008 NHRA Heritage Series funny car champ Bucky Austin, driving Steve Plueger’s “Northwest Hitter” Plymouth Arrow led testers with his late Sunday afternoon 5.960/239.23 charge after multiple wheelstanding passes earlier in the weekend. Bucky and Plueger were experimenting with running the car without wheelie bars which resulted in some serious wheel stands.
Mendy Fry, driving “McCain’s Bomb Squad” ’73 Duster flopper was testing a completely new combination under the direction of tuning consultant and defacto crew chief Roland Leong for this test. After working on their short game on Saturday, the team and Roland got serious and posted the quickest quarter mile runs for the team ever when Mendy shoed the AA/FC to an early shut off 6.073/204 MPH. The team came back and made another full pass recording a best ever 6.036/228 MPH and a then a final lap running 6.15/229 MPH. The next stop for the team is the March Meet.
Las Vegas Super Comp competitor Jessica Cherniak made plenty of laps to earn her Advanced ET license over the weekend. Jessica was excited to have nostalgia funny car pilot Mendy Fry (at right with Cherniak) to sign off on her license form and will compete in the CIFCA Series during the 2009 season as she works her way up to the TA/FC ranks.
