Even though ADRL did put up a $10,000 bonus offer in the second round of Pro Extreme qualifying to drivers Bubba Stanton and Jason Scruggs if they could run side-by-side 200-mph passes, it didn’t happen.

There was certainly plenty of drama during Pro Extreme eliminations at Dragstock this year. Despite atrocious atmospheric conditions (137 grains of water) and a blazing hot track, the racers rose to the occasion in both qualifying and eliminations.

Perhaps most notable was the performance of Mopar racer Chip King and his ’69 Daytona. King usually has crew chief/tuner Bill Barrett in his camp but Barrett was unable to attend this race and King assumed the driving and tuning chores at this event. King runs his IHRA-legal combination at these events with no screw supercharger on it nor is the car a lightweight. Despite that, King went to the finals taking out defending series Pro Extreme Champion Jason Scruggs in the semi-finals for the dubious honor of meeting a rampaging Bubba Stanton in the finals.

To say Stanton was the dominant car at the event is an understatement. Stanton qualified one the pole with a 3.819 lap and in eliminations never ran slower than 3.868. In fact, he set Low ET of the meet in the second round with a 3.808. His average ET in eliminations was an unreal 3.833 and his reaction times were better than his opponents’ in every round but the first.

In the final Stanton had a .055 RT to King’s .117 and even though King ran his best ET of the event with a 3.962 it wasn’t near enough to cover Stanton’s 3.816/197.02 blast.
