Both drivers took off together and both had to pedal their mounts but Chris took the win light and a 6.60 e.t. at 183 mph to Vince’s right there 6.64 at 225.16 mph.

Gil Valencia in the “Black Max” coupe got off the line first and ran a 7.72 e.t. at 176 mph and beat Dale Dow, who got out of shape at 1,000 feet and shut it off wisely to a 9.16 e.t. at 161 mph.

March Meet NE 1 winner Austin Frye, in his Lucas Oil-backed 23-T, ran a 7.552/146.67 against Dale Gruzen, who broke on the burnout.

Dave Ward took on George Johns, with Ward winning this one easily with a 7.398/181.59 to Johns’ trailing 7.736 at 166.11 mph.

Dale Boomgarten took the next race as Richard Phillips left before the lights were turned on.

Kent Specht in his “Baby Huey” 4.0 would not get hold of track and ran a 8.402 at 116 mph. Kent ran a 6.60 during Friday night drags but Saturday he had trouble hooking up. (James Drew photo)
