Great traction provides great times at VMP
Traction plus action equaled the best Sportsman race of the 2008 NHRA POWERade series Oct. 10-12 at Virginia Motorsports Park. At that race the traditional NHRA Sportsman classes of Stock, Super Stock and Competition Eliminator were contested and some of the quickest ET’s of the year were delivered.
In Competition Eliminator 41 cars were on hand trying for the 32-car qualified field, making it much harder to qualify for Comp Eliminator than any professional category. The number one qualifier was Bob Book from Frankfort, Ill., driving his A/D to a 6.315 on a 7.04 index.
Not only was Book the number one qualifier, but he was also the quickest car in the Eliminator. To qualify for the 32-car field you had to be able to run at least .055 under your class index. The bump spot was held down by Frank Cervelli, who ran a 7.08 on a 7.64 index.

Comp Eliminator number 1 qualifier Bob Book has the laundry out to stop his A/D after a qualifying pass.
In Comp racing the winner is often not the quickest car and that was the case at this event. Veteran racer Arnie Martel, who qualified his “34 Chevy B/SR in the fifth spot, won his fourth title of the year with a lap of 7.687/168.60 that trailered number 8 qualifier Allen Stanfield and his “98 Pontiac Grand Am that clocked a 8.688/ 155.63 on a 9.38 index.

DD/AT driver Bruno Massel qualified his 4-cylinder turbo charged Chevy Cobalt in the seven slot with a 7.229 on a 7.90 index. He was a first round runner-up.
