Kyle Huettel purges the nitrous in his ex-Darrin-Hoyle-owned ’69 Camaro before a late-night Beat the Heat run over MMP’s eighth mile. Huettel managed to beat his car’s former owner in the Limited Street semis and went on to win the final over Keith Szabo.

t was hotter than a scorned woman Aug. 17-18 at Montgomery (AL) Motorsports Park, but Dallas, GA’s Michael Robinson kept his cool along the way to picking up the Outlaw 10.5 win with a holeshot over Brian Markiewicz in the final pairing of Beat the Heat II, a stand-alone, eighth-mile show promoted by fellow 10.5 racer and defending event champion, Ken Rainwater.
“The car was running consistent all day, going from A to B and doing everything we asked it to do,” Robinson said of his VIP Racing Camaro. “I was having pretty good lights, too, and everything just fell into place.”
Things also fell into place for Texas racer Kyle Huettel, who qualified his ’69 Camaro first in Limited Street, then advanced to win the $10,000 final over Georgia’s Keith Szabo. Also making it to victory lane were Shane Stack in EZ Street and Brian Murphy in Modified Street, with index class winners including Matt Tucker (5.30), Kevin Pruett (6.0) and Lucas Bendahl (7.0).
OUTLAW 10.5
With the air at 100-plus degrees and track temps around the 145 mark, Georgia’s Tony Johnson set the pace in Outlaw 10.5 qualifying, finishing on top of the 14-car field with a 4.56 at 166.32 mph in his blown Hemi-powered ’69 Camaro. Steve Kirk was second after making a 4.63-seconds pass in his nitrous-fed, 870 c.i. 2000 Camaro and Robinson started from the third slot, followed by Jimmy Blackmon and Markiewicz.
