Not only was he the burnout king of EZ Street at Montgomery, but Huntsville, GA’s Shane Stack qualified number one and finished runner-up in the final round.
The opening round was a disappointment, too, as not one car made a strong, representative pass for the class, with Reese posting low E.T. for the round at 5.28 seconds. Round two featured more of the same, though Stack did manage a 5.24 against Pieere Burley, who fouled out with a redlight off the start, and Reese went 5.32 to advance against Crowden in the semis.

Stack’s semi-final match against Heath Bell resulted in a tire-smoking 6.08 win to Bell’s 6.27, while Reese posted a 5.29 against Crowden, who had to shut off early with traction woes.

David Reese (near lane) recorded his second-straight ORSCA event title at Montgomery after winning at Atlanta Dragway a month earlier.
In the final round, Reese left with a .028 holeshot -- and needed every bit of it -- as he managed another 5.28 at 148.12 mph while Stack put together a quicker 5.25/145.70

combination.

“This has been the toughest track we raced all year and the competition has been tough,” Reese said later. “To pick spots on the track where we needed power and where we didn’t has been really hard. This was a tuner’s race as much as a driver’s race; I really believe that.”

MODIFIED STREET

ORSCA’s new Modified Street class for single-stage nitrous, small-block cars continued to impress at Montgomery, though it came one entry short of filling a 16-car field. Spurgeon Adkins from Cordele, GA, led qualifying with a 5.54 at 129.87 in his Fox-body Mustang, with eventual finalist Ryan Rakestraw starting second with a 5.62 in Scott Taylor’s ’67 Chevy II. Dustin Mewbourn, winner of the first two completed Modified Street events went 5.64 to qualify his Fox Mustang third.
