NMRA Milan Race Wrap

A month and a half is a long layoff for drag racers. While some relished the reprieve between the second round of the National Mustang Racers Association season in Reynolds, GA, and the next event at Milan, MI, others used the opportunity to test, sort their combination, or compete at the World Ford Challenge. For the rest, including those who would finish the postponed final rounds from the rained out Reynolds race, there was the lure of a never-before-visited track, Milan Dragway, which would be hosting the 4th Annual Toyo Tires NMRA Ford Nationals for the first time.

PRO 5.0

Five Pro 5.0 Ford racers tested the limits of Milan’s dragstrip in qualifying on Friday and Saturday. Tony Bischoff, who was typically a mid-pack qualifier during the 2006 season but often the dominant performer on raceday, changed his M.O. at Milan getting the pole with a qualifying pass of 6.677/200.09. Pro 5.0 defending champ Mike Hauf was just a tick or two behind at 6.695, with Burt Kelkboom making a motor-killing lap of 6.780 that prevented him

from answering the call for the first round of competition, and Joe Morgan’s 6.820/170+ rounded out the top four Pro 5.0 qualifiers.

In the semis Morgan dropped a favored Bischoff in an all-nitrous round eliminations to earn a spot in the final round against Mike Hauf (shown). In the final round Hauf put an .018 holeshot on Hauf that held up and gave him the win.

SUPER STREET

No less than 17 actual 10.5-wide tire-equipped Mustangs attempted to qualify in Super Street action. Coming straight off a WFC victory, Samuel Vincent turned up his nitrous small-block to the tune of 7.504 at 183.74 mph to take the top qualifying slot, followed by 2006 champ John Urist, running 7.520 but carrying almost another ten miles an hour through the traps. Jarrett Halfacre took third with a 7.541 to make the order spray-blower-turbo, while Zack Posey and Billy Laskowsky rounded out the seven-fifty club.
