UEM Pro Stock Bike

Left: NHRA-standout Chip Ellis spent the weekend wrapped up warm and giving guidance to Denmark’s Tom Tinndahn over the setup of his year old G Squared Buell. Having clocked the quickest pass in UEM PSB (7.228) late last season, it’s only a matter of time before Tinndahn gets into the 7.1s. It doesn’t take the brightest of minds to predict that the battle with Anders Jakobsson (low qualifier with a new European record 7.243), not to mention the rest of the greatly expanded field, will be a season highlight.

Right: In keeping with the PBs that were strewn across the two and four wheeled categories, riders in the bumper Pro Stock Bike didn’t miss out. Anders Larsson, so often the victim of mechanical failure after stellar performances, debuted a new TL1000 clad bike and made his first trip into the 7.2s with a 7.292 with plenty more to come.

It fell to Roger Goring and the Firestorm jet funny car to provide the residents of ‘The Barn’ their final opportunity to ride the flame and thunder show. A relict of a more innocent (and less health and safety conscious) age, the unique viewing opportunities provided by the track level shelter now belong in the past as Santa Pod continues to evolve into a modern track facility.

Having cracked 300 mph at Easter, the Showtime team led by John Spuffard and Bob Jarrett debuted an all new combination
in the form of Robert Hight’s 2006 chassis and an ex-Medlen Mustang body. The “Eric car”, named in tribute to the sadly departed JFR star, looks stunning in the Showtime colours and
is clearly producing the ponies to have a crack at the 4 second barrier later in the season in the resurgent Nitro Funny Car class.

One of the more eagerly awaited debuts at the meeting was the Dutch Awesome 50 Mercury of Leo van der Kuijl. The spectacular leadsled only managed a single pass, which wasn’t close to it’s 8.90 dial-in, but the superbly detailed lowrider is destined to be a favourite with the Santa Pod faithful whilst Holland struggles in it’s search for a permanent dragstrip and the Dutch teams hop over the Channel to continue their displaced national championship.
