FIA Pro Modified

The growth of Pro Mod continues to show no sign of stopping with the huge entry at the Main Event producing a phenomenal qualifying session (summed up by Tog of eurodragster.com on his live report with the line “Was that the best-ever European Pro Mod qualifying session? You better believe it!”) under gloom laden skies. With a new Carl Speiring built motor under the hood of his 57 Bel Air smashed over two tenths off his PB with a 6.176/230 to take pole position and clock the first 230 mph pass in Euro Pro Mod. Not bad for a soft setting.

Also running with ERD horsepower, Gordon Appleton was another to reset his PB with a 6.308 from his Camaro. No problems about getting the car off the line either, with a 1.001 being the quickest in the class (although matched by Mikael Lindahl), a bit more power in the second half and the Wheelgame driver will be challenging for honours in what has been announced to be his last season (say it ain’t so Gordon say it ain’t so).

PBs were cheap at the Main Event with eight of the twenty three entries recording their best marks. Micke Gullquist’s continued development of the Chevy Hemi concept yielded a low ET of 6.245 from last season’s series runner-up. When we spoke to Micke pre-race he said “I will bring a nuclear missile or something to get me going, so don’t be surprised if you see a big cloud when I’m leaving”. Unfortunately the only big cloud appeared overhead, and another couple of sessions would have seen him easily in the 6.1s.

FIA Pro Stock Car

Pre-race several drivers were predicting 6.8s being absolutely essential to win in Pro Stock Car this season. After two sessions the top four were already there with Michael Malmgren on the brink of dipping into the 6.7s with a 6.803/202.59 to reset the ET mark in his new Bickel GTO with Ingles horsepower; a dramatic change of fortune from the 2006 event which ended with a massive impact with the concrete.

Finnish flyer Eero Knithila denied Michael Malmgren the TS mark with a 6.856/202.60 from his crystal white Cavalier. Having finished third in the title chase in 2006, Knithila is offering a real threat to Malmgren and defending series champion Jimmy Alund this season with his home race in Alastaro to look forward to at the next round in the series.
