Before their first-round match-up, Mike Curtis and Steve Kirk were reminiscing in the staging lanes about the last time Kirk faced off against Curtis’ very cool ’66 Corvette. “I think it would’ve been about 1991 or ’92,” Curtis said. “I’ve been racing this car a long time, probably 20 years.” For the record, Kirk prevailed in a troubled traction test for both drivers on the slick Atlanta Dragway surface.
Right: Brake failure in the 2000 Firebird campaigned by Josh McClelland sent the chassis builder off the far end of the Atlanta Dragway shutdown lane, through the sandpit and into the catch fence after Saturday night’s final qualifying session. McClelland said the data recorder stopped 32 seconds after he launched on a 4.798 pass at 160.38 mph. “That’s a long time to think about crashing,” he said. “I thought about trying to make the last turnoff, but thought I’d just make it worse, so I just aimed for the middle and hoped for the best.” The car’s nose took an obvious beating, but McClelland said he thought the damage wasn’t too bad. Still, it was enough for him to call it a weekend and head back home to Fitzgerald, GA, before eliminations began.

Limited Street
| Limited Street in Atlanta belonged to Darrin Hoyle. The Taylors, NC, auto dealer qualified his nitrous-assisted ’69 Camaro on top of an 11-car Sheppard Race Cars Limited Street field with a 4.801-seconds pass at 156.72 mph, then made the only four-second pass in round one in a bye run. Hoyle’s .057 holeshot in round two allowed his 4.961/154.78 to beat the quicker and faster 4.936/158.32 posted by Mike Donnahue’s turbocharged ’95 Avenger. In the semis, Hoyle beat defending class champ Jeff Cooner, then edged Keith Szabo with a 4.988/153.65 against the 5.037/158.50 combo put together by Szabo. |
