INDEX RACERS

Phillip Sexton and his mid-‘80s Monza survived from the 24th starting position to take the Southern Truck Parts 5.30 title in Atlanta. Sexton started with a double-breakout win over
Tony Watkins, then advanced past a redlighting Auja Rogers. In the quarter-finals, Sexton had a .001 light leading to a 5.307 pass that put number-one qualifier Jeremy Ellis on the trailer and in the semis he came back from a holeshot by Lizon Walker to reach the final. Opposite him, Bubba Rich got there by beating Larry Peavey, taking a second-round bye, defeating Joe Smith, and holeshotting John Smith in the semis. In the final, Rich left with a .007 advantage in his 2002 Firebird, but Sexton’s 5.314 at 127.73 package took the win over Rich’s 5.339 at 130.78 mph pass.

Jim Knight made a perfect 6.000-seconds pass at 114.63 mph in his 1992 Mustang LX to lead the 25-car Industrial Depot 6.0 index field, followed by Lebron Hill at 6.004 in his ’68 Camaro.
