Hot Times at Huntsville

As dusk fell on Saturday night, Outlaw 10.5 stars Tim Lynch (far lane) and Steve Kirk made side-by-side qualifying passes for the ORSCA season opener at a packed Huntsville Dragway.
Despite overcast skies and threats of rain much of the weekend, up to 10,000 fans packed the stands at Huntsville Dragway Mar. 30-Apr. 1, for the Year One Outlaw Racing Street Car Association (ORSCA) 2007 season opener. Fortunately, only a couple of minor showers
delayed the proceedings before Maryland’s Richard Sexton prevailed over Texan Todd Moyer in the marquee Outlaw 10.5 final, while Darrin Hoyle took the Limited Street win home to North Carolina and local racer Shane Stack was awarded the EZ Street title.

ORSCA also debuted a new heads-up class at Huntsville, with Dustin Mewbourne making history as the first Modified Street winner, and event titles in the always-tight index classes going to Tim Jones (5.30), Brent Shaw (6.0) and Andy Schaefer (7.0) at the end of the day.
OUTLAW 10.5
Monroe, GA’s Steve Kirk Jr. seized the Mickey Thompson Outlaw 10.5 number-one qualifying spot in dramatic fashion, going a track-record 4.459 seconds at 166.05 mph as the last car down the Huntsville eighth mile on Saturday night. Kirk and his nitrous-assisted ‘02 Camaro wrested the top spot away from Tim Lynch, who went 4.493 in his twin-turboed 2000 Mustang. Following Lynch on the list were Chuck Ulsch, Ken Rainwater and Ulsch’s teammate Sexton.

With this Saturday-night qualifying pass, Steve Kirk earned his fourth number-one start and fourth track E.T. record after entering four events so far this season.
