In the semi final Sangla’s Cinderella day finally came to an end when Mock turned in a 6.624/211.10 mph to Dal’s fine effort of 6.685/216.65. On the other side of the ladder it was an all Midwest affair with Moran and his potent Monte Carlo against Samuels’ big Ford. Moran put it all together with his finest pass of the evening 6.284 and that aforementioned Top Speed of 241.93 to bury Samuels’ game 6.455/220.55 mph.
In the final round Moran was definitely the heavy favorite now, after his record run in the semi’s and he was not to be denied running a respectable 6.472/233.76 to Jimmy Mock’s 6.834, 215.89 mph.
Outlaw Street
The Outlaw Street racers were out in force with 18 of the 10.5-tired monsters on hand. After qualifying it looked like a one-car show with Glenview, IL, veteran -- and like Mike Moran, one of the original Street Car racing superstars -- Spiro Pappas and his ‘69 black and gold Camaro just running away with the #1 honors with a stout number of 6.792/212.36.
Not too far behind was the son of Hall of Famer Pro Stock racer/engine builder Bob Glidden. Billy Glidden, a great racer and engine builder in his own right, shoed his potent 1990 Black Mustang to a 6.92. West Coast favorite Rich Zehring had the only other sub-seven-second pass at 6.98. Glidden didn’t race on Sunday after his pet parrot that he had raised himself, passed away, making Pappas the odds-on favorite to win.
