Accompanying the full range of Sportsman Championship racing, including the series run under National, Santa Pod Racers Club, VW Drag Racing Club, Auto Cycle Union and National Association of Super Twins banners, a whole fleet of UK Pro Mods took the opportunity to get some practice laps in before heading to Scandinavia for the FIA Europe rounds. Of these, Gordon Appleton will be the happiest with consistent 6.3s and 6.4s at a nudge over 220 mph, Danny Cockerill also got down the track with a respectable 6.65 which was bracketed by some seriously wild rides (the final pass was so close to putting the 57 Chevy into the wall) and Andy Robinson still has to find out which direction to take the chassis setup to convert a high six into the more typical 6.2s and 6.3s he was running at the end of last season and avoiding terrible tireshake.

Nitro Funny Car racer Gordon Smith was also
grateful for the track time, working away from tire
smoke at the hit to an impressive 0.891 60 foot time on a seemingly smooth 600-foot final pass. Hints that big things are afoot in the UK Nitro Funny Car ranks came over the weekend. The first being the surprise that John Spuffard and Bob Jarrett have their current Showtime Mustang up for sale, this being to make way for a fresher Stateside import, and this was followed up with talks over a potential UK Championship in 2007 if enough teams are able to make the call and the possibility of a European series if all goes well. DRO has also learnt of at least one more Stateside flopper making it's way across the pond to Europe. So, after a couple of years in the doldrums, Nitro Funny Car is showing signs of life again, which can only be a good thing.
