Rich Hayes (above, near lane) in Top Alcohol Hydro, and Tony Scarlatta in Top Alcohol Flat dominated their respective classes in record breaking fashion. Hayes in the beautiful
“Just Another Crapshoot” posted a 5.23 e.t. record over Gus Ward, and backed it up with an earlier 5.28 charge. Hayes has set the pace in the points as he won for the second time in two races. “Hang Fin” Scarlatta in “Modern Outlaw” was equally impressive as he worked his way through a great field, and finished the weekend with an unreal 6.55 second record breaker to take the win.
Sunday’s race was marred by one scary incident as Kent Price in the Top Alchol Hydro “Quicker Than Split” was unable to get the chutes out, and, after a 200+ mph round one win, collided with the notorious Red Bluff Dam at a high rate of speed. The IHBA rescue team did an outstanding job (as always), and quickly hooked the dislodged capsule from the destroyed Hydro. Price was airlifted to the hospital, but thankfully suffered only minor injuries.
The next stop in the Lucas Oil IHBA series takes place June 9-11 in Chowchilla, CA.
