The .004 reaction advantage Michael Strickland (near lane) seized in the 6.0 final proved to be critical as he and Jason Richards both posted 6.01-seconds laps. |
Strickland, from Alma, GA, was the only ORSCA racer at U.S. 19 able to back up his win from a week earlier in South Carolina. In the 6.0 final, he left with a .009 light to Jason Richards’ .013, then posted a winning 6.010 to Richards’ 6.013-seconds pass in his Gastonia, NC-based ’63 Chevy II. “The car worked great and I just had it together this weekend,” Strickland said.
![]() Ricky Millard (far lane) stumbled in the 7.0 final, allowing defending ORSCA champ Ricky Pennington to solo for the event win. |
Defending ORSCA class champion “Lil’ Rick” Pennington broke through with his first 7.0 win of the year, beating Ricky Millard in the final round at Albany. When Millard broke on the line, Pennington cruised to an easy 7.973 at just 70.18 mph, letting off well before the finish to ensure he wouldn’t break out. Millard later admitted it may have been just driver error that cost him a chance at the win. “When I got on the floor it just fell on its nose and quit. I think I just got on it too quick,” he said.
“The driver was a little off today, but the car was good,” Pennington said of his ’64 Chevelle. “It never moved more than three-hundredths in the 60-foot all weekend, with this weather being as hot as it was.”
After staging back-to-back races on subsequent weekends, ORSCA is taking a couple of weeks off before heading to Farmington (NC) Dragway June 9-11, then has nearly a month off before a return to Atlanta Dragway July 7-9.
