Steve Mikus, from Michigan, won on Day 3 and epitomizes what a good racer can accomplish on a budget. Not that he doesn’t have everything it takes to win, he just doesn’t bother with the “fancy stuff.”

This was attempt #1 to get the past Moroso Event Champions in one spot for a photo. It didn’t work out this time, but if you know any of these guys you know this is a bunch of guys with pockets full of winning time slips. This is a classic gathering and one that may not happen again. I was pumped just to be there.

Frosty Dillman had one of only two door cars in the Race of Champions. His ultra-sharp Nova carried the wheels about two feet off the ground every run and was turning 9.90-10.0 ETs round after round.

Scott Weney, head honcho at S&W Race Cars showing off a bit of his handiwork. This Camaro roadster is a sweet piece. It looks even better close up. It took a hit in the shut-down area when a sand crane decided it need to land where his car was headed. Damage was minor but when it’s a new car it seemed major to him I am sure.

This is Danny Bastinelli’s “Destroyer Dragster”. What can you say about Danny -- he does it his way. And I am here to tell you this, his “way” is flat-out FAST. The dial-in Friday was 6.98! Oh yeah, he uses ALL the bottle!

This is about as close as you get to a final Race of Champions qualifier photo. It was taken right after Jeggie scored the $5,000 win. Just in case you haven’t met him, that is Randy Folk in front of the dragster with a “bit of the Champagne” in memory of Dick Moroso and his race that the Folk family have done so well at over the years.

The Nicholson crew is not going to skip a FREE PARTY. Moroso put on a great Casino Night banquet and party for participants and crew. My son Ryan, his wife Kelli and “little man” grandson Trevor, as well as the “better-half” Barb are checking out the excellent food. Not sure where son Andy was but he was around there somewhere.

SURPRISE… John Labbous with no shirt!! I actually saw him wearing one but I’ll be darned if I didn’t have my camera to record it. He did rack up a great big pile of chips in the Charity Casino Night. It was a blast and fun for everyone.

What you are looking at are “spy photos” of VELOCITA, a Moroso Motorsport Park development plan. It is approved and will get underway very soon. The good news for us drag racers is the dragstrip is being completely removed and rebuilt with state of the art methods to assure a great racing surface. They told me next year’s 26th Annual 5-Day will take place. Other features and designs will make the new VELOCITA a standard by which other motorsports facilities will be measured. Click to Enlarge
