| Joe Bettencourt’s love of Top Fuel racing was severely tested after he crashed on a single in Sunday’s eliminations, destroying his Top Fueler. Bettencourt’s car was an ex-Dick LaHaie Top Fueler that had the chassis upgraded at Dave Uyehara’s shop, and those upgrades may have saved the likeable independent from serious injury. Bettencourt told DRO that the pass was good until the clutch locked up two seconds into the pass, making the rear wheels to spin faster and causing the rear-end to wash out, driving the car left followed by a couple of flips totaling the chassis. Bettencourt, whose day job is a technician at an import dealership, supports his Top Fuel habit by building race motors and spending his own money and now is basically out of racing until he can find a new chassis. DRO is going to do whatever we can to help Joe Bettencourt recover and get back to the sport. If anyone wants to help contact this office and we’ll pass the info along. | |
