Local racer Dallas Burger surprised the 7.0 field with an on-again, off-again 7.000 pass to qualify number one. Defending class champ Pennington was second of 30 entries at 7.001 seconds.

When his right rear axle snapped on the launch of his second qualifying attempt, Chris Smart’s 1991 S-10 took an immediate right turn and wound up straddling the center divider just in front of the starting tree. Track officials said they added the center guardrails just last year and without them Smart would definitely have taken out the tree and probably put an end to the racing that day.

After working on it since March, Mike Moulder made his debut in the 7.0 class at Albany with a new 454-equipped 2001 S-10 pick-up. Built by Moulder and 6.0 veterans Jody Voyles and Jamie Giroir, the slick pick-me-up qualified 26th, but set top speed for the class at 103.15 mph.
