When only six L/S entries showed up in Albany to contest the class, Calera, AL’s Ricky Pennington, the defending ORSCA 7.0 champion, entered his 1964 Chevelle because just getting to the second round would more than pay off, his father explained. Pennington qualified seventh with a 6.772 pass at 102.24 mph.

Bob LaBrecque stood his ’73 Nova up on its rear bumper in the last round of EZ Street qualifying. The big wheelie came as a surprise to the Dallas, GA-based racer, but he said no significant damage was incurred.

Top qualifier honors in the 5.30 index class went to C.G. Knight and his Chevy-powered ’68 Ford “Pulpwood” truck. Knight ran 5.301 to lead the field of 22 entries.

David Harvey Jr. ran a near-perfect 6.0009 in his ’84 Trans Am to pace the 6.0 class at Albany.
