Just seconds after the announcer implored crowd members to stop by Lance Styck’s pit at U.S. 19 Dragway to check out the outstanding workmanship on his 2004 Mustang, it was reduced to a battered wreck when Styck lost control about half-track.

Next up was Lance Styck making a solo pass also in the left lane with his twin-turbocharged late-model Mustang. Styck looked to be on a great run until about half-track when he drifted right toward the centerline, then back toward the wall and his car began sliding sideways before its wheelie bars got caught up in the left guardrails. The car immediately launched into a series of violent barrel rolls, scattering parts for several hundred feet before finally coming to rest on its battered and broken wheels well into the shutdown area.

Styck managed to extricate himself from the wreck and though not visibly injured, on-the-scene observers said he appeared—quite understandably—dazed and disoriented. As a precaution he was transported to a local hospital for observation, but was home in Americus, GA, feeling sore but okay the next day.

All day long Steve Kirk looked strong in the Kirk-Ferguson Racing entry, but once night fell his 2000 Camaro carried him to a new track record at U.S. 19 Dragway.

After a relatively quick cleanup considering the severity of Styck’s crash, Steve Kirk (who built the chassis for Styck’s car) qualified number one and collected the cash with a stellar 4.495-seconds pass at 167.44 mph, setting both ends of the track records for Outlaw 10.5 entries.

“It stumbled slightly off the line, it only went a 1.23 60-foot but that was only on the back tires,” Kirk said. “So it probably should’ve been about a .45. The track was really good tonight, even better than I expected.”

Joining Kirk and Stack atop the qualifying lists were Keith Szabo in Limited Street, C.G. Knight (5.30), David “Chris” Harvey (6.0), and Dallas Burger in the 7.0 index class.

ORSCA will determine its 2006 champions with its final event of the year Nov. 17-19, at Carolina Dragway, near Jackson, SC.
