John Powers III is shaking out his new Powers Steel-sponsored Camaro funny car. The flopper carries the driver’s name Denny Savage on the roof, Savage drove the original Powers Steel car to a late 70’s victory over Johnny Loper in the March Meet final. Powers sits 25th of the 26 nitro funny cars in Friday’s qualifying, with two Saturday sessions planned.
|
Steve Nichols and his “Mill Road Boys” flopper netted the #10 qualifying slot in Friday’s first nitro funny car session. With the current configuration, March Meet funny cars are separated into an 8-car “A-field” and “B-Field”, Nichols would sit second in the “B-Field” after his 6.342 ET pass.

Drag Racing Online’s Nostalgia Editor Jeff Utterback drove the “Pisano & Matsubara” ‘74 Vega nitro funny car to a career best 6.008 ET at 234.55 MPH and sits #2 behind Bucky Austin.
Now keeping it in the family, Danny Pisano’s sleek flopper sports the new JP III “Crow” engine block instead of the Arias block used for much of last year. The “Crow” designation is another tribute to drag racing engine pioneer and Danny’s late uncle Joe Pisano.
