Wilmes wins $20,000 Street Car Super Nationals Pro Street finale at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

Kirk Wilmes (near lane) of Altns, Oklahoma driving his G-Force Race Cars-built ’68 Firebird defeated New Yorker Vinny DeMieri’s ’06 GTO to claim the $20,000-to-win the Hughes Performance Pro Street finale at the Street Car Super Nationals held at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Because of time constraints caused by repeated oildowns and decreasingly cold weather taking the strip surface in the low 40’s, the Vegas dragstrip was shortened to an 1/8-mile for completion of the event.  Wilmes’ winning time was 4.092 sec. at 183.67 mph to DeMieri’s 4.253 sec. at 171.34 mph.

In qualifying rounds Kirk Wilmes battled Mike Moran and his Monte Carlo for the the #1 position with Moran holding down low ET.  Moran went out in round two of eliminations, but with consistent elapsed times the 25-year-old Wilmes and his swoopy, black, HEMI-powered Firebird took home the trophy and the cash for the Hughes Performance Pro Street class.

In what could be a look ahead to the final round of Outlaw Street, Sunday morning’s make-up round of qualifying put Spiro Pappas next to Bill Glidden in a battle for the #1 spot.  At the green light both cars left together with Glidden having the advantage at 330 feet.  Glidden was still ahead at 1,000 feet (5.557 to Pappas’ 5.580).

As Glidden said after the run, “I knew I was making a pretty good run… I just put it in fifth and I was watching back to see and he (Pappas) was making a good run.  So, I was trying to get dad and me on opposite sides of the bracket here, so I just let off in the last hundred feet and let him slide on in, and then I’d be number two and put dad in fourth - so we were on opposite sides of the ladder.

At the stripe, Pappas grabbed the #1 position in Outlaw Street with his 6.625/212.56 MPH to Glidden’s 6.637/206.70 MPH. The two leaders are followed closely by Ron Lummus at 6.726 and Bob Glidden moves to fourth with his earlier 6.764.
