Reese Debuts Twin-Procharger Mustang
Jan 27, 08 | 1:03 am
Rockmart, GA's David Reese, the defending ORSCA EZ Street champion, debuted his unique two-into-one, direct-drive, Procharger-boosted 2002 Mustang at Bradenton. He and tuner Alan Dudley approaced the race conservatively--too conservatively as it turned out. Dudley said they underestimated how fast to turn the Prochargers, as they were going only 50,000 rpm(!) when they needed to be at 70K rpm or more. As a result the 588 c.i. ProLine engine was receiving only about seven of the 15 pounds of boost it needs for the launch and went through the traps at only eight psi instead of the desired 40 pounds. Regardless, they were encouraged by a 1.13 60-foot time in their second attempt and by how well the Tommy Mauney chassis performed. After missing the first session on Friday, Reese made two qualifying passes on Saturday, but wasn't included on the sheets after weighing in too light at the scales. "I'm stil happy," Reese stated. "It's a new thing, the direct drive stayed together, the blowers stayed together, everything worked just the way it should--it just needs more power and I'm not worried about that." Pilcher Packs a Punch
Jan 27, 08 | 12:05 am
Johnny Pilcher arrived Saturday morning from Enterprise, AL, with a brand-new Sonny Leonard-built 865 cubic incher between the rails of his '63 Corvette--he even had to borrow a larger scoop to clear the monster motor. Pilcher shook hard in his first attempt with the new powerplant, but bolted on a pair of 36-inch Top Fuel tires for his second and final Pro Street qualifying pass and placed fourth. Pilchr said he loves the new Sonny's power, but not the extra 300 pounds he had to bolt on to reach the 2,600-pound minimum placed on his combination. (Ian Tocher photo)

Tutterow Trades Cars
Jan 26, 08 | 11:30 pm
On the launch of his second qualifying attempt, Todd Tutterow blew out the blower burst panel on his "Big Dog" Mustang and damaged the left cylinder head. Without time to make repairs, Tutterow instead trotted out his ADRL Pro Extreme '41 Willys and managed to get it teched barely in time to make a leisurely 7.99 pass in the final session to qualify for Sunday's elimination rounds. He explained the car blew an oil pressure plug in testing at the Bradenton track on Thursday, and figuring he'd just fix it at home he put it back in the trailer, but was forced to make a lap with practically no oil pressure. The 526 Hemi in the Willys was immediately torn down and repaired and is ready to go on Sunday. (Ian Tocher photos)
