A fuel line came off the blown 526 Chevy in Scott Filkins' 2006 GTO and leaned out the left rear cylinder at the end of his first qualifying pass, resulting in a brief fire. Holes also were burned in the cast block and head, so Filkins and crew are taking them to a local welding shop on Saturday for repair. The Wareham, MA, racer hopes to have everything fixed in time for at least one qualifying session on Saturday, but promises to be back in action for eliminations. (Ian Tocher photos)

Bradenton Motorsports Park will host its U.S. Street Nationals this weekend, Jan. 25-27, and this year it will be an all-eighth-mile affair for the first time in history.

Racers in five classes—Pro Street, Outlaw 10.5, Heavy Street, Drag Radial, and a 6.50 index class for stock-type chassis doorslammers only—will tackle the south-Florida strip. Additionally, a racer swap meet will be held all weekend.

Last year, number-one qualifier Eddie Ware prevailed in Pro Street and Gil Mobley’s two-car team with drivers Chuck Ulsch and Richard Sexton qualified one-two in that order, then split the win and the purse after both made it to the final round. Bill Lutz came from the number-three spot to win with the first six-second pass in the Heavy Street class in the final round and top qualifier Will Stevenson was the ‘07 Drag Radial winner.

Bradenton Motorsports Park is located on Hwy. 64 about 10 miles east of I-75 and gates open at 8 a.m. each day. Spectator admission is $20 on Friday, with $25 charged at the gate on both Saturday and Sunday.
DRO will be there with same-day updates and photos beginning Friday evening.
