They qualify the quick 16 Top Fuel cars at the March Meet and they just had 16 at this event after the crash between Mike Chrisman and Dan Horan Sr on Friday. Apparently two of the qualifiers Mark Malde and Brendan Murray (shown) had issues as they were shut off. Number one qualifier Brett Harris then ripped off a 5.692 setting Low ET of the meet.

During the eliminations the carnage that has plagued the class all weekend continued. Brad Thompson beat Rick McGee with a solid 5.99/232.01 lap but had a major oiling issue on the lap as well as a handling issue as all four wheels came of the ground when he deployed the chute, Other winners in the first round included Mike McLennan, Rick White who ran 5.788 , Denver Schutz, and Shannon Stuart.

After the first round of Top Fuel the schedule picks up the Funny Car “A” and “B” mains.

In “A” main action Bucky Austin in Steve Plueger’s ‘72 Plymouth Arrow “Northwest Hitter” racing against Dennis Taylor in the “Future Flash” reset the National Record that he already held with a 5.754/246 lap backing up the 5.75 he ran last evening. He has gone as quick as 5.74 but never backed that lap up.

Lee Paul Jennings put a major holeshot on Ed Dougan in the ‘Fighting Irish” car using a .033 RT to bury Dougan’s pedestrian 112 RT. It was enough of a starting line advantage that Dougan’s 5.933/238.60 was covered by Jennings’ 5.992/221.34

In the “B” main Mike Halstead (shown) drove his ‘69 Dodge Daytona to his first five-second pass- a 5.990/240.25 thanks to tuner Jeff Gaynor becoming the ninth car at this event in the fives. He defeated Craig Michael .

Halstead will meet Dennis LaCharite who is driving the only GTO at the event. He became the 10th flopper in the fives at this historic event with a 5.956/240.57 whipping of Mendy Fry who was getting tune-up assistance from Roland Leong at this event. Fry recorded her career funny Car pass with a 6.036/240 losing effort. Steve Romanazzi and Jack Wright also advanced.

In what could be considered the upset of the race so far Mark Sanders cut a .243 light combined with a 5.887/243.70 that easily covered Terry Capp’s 5.858/247.72 because of Capp’s .547 RT. 19 year old tuner Jake Sanders continues to impress the fans and the racers.

The other winner in the first round of the “A” Main included Garret Bateman in the Plueger and Gyeger Mustang who used a 5.82 to get by Kris Krabill’s respectable 5.87.
