Heath Harvey earned HMP's 2005 Top Sportsman title but the Clarksville, Texan's nitrous-aided, PowerGlide-equipped 706-inch '97 Grand Prix was unable to return for race day after a 4.31/167 Friday best.
Bill Kuhlmann's "Ripper" wasn't the only nitro-burner on the property; local Jerry Hicks brought out his Nitro Coupe Stingray but dealt with shake and wild rides on every attempt.
Outlaw veteran Hugh Scott has been confounded by his new '63 Stingray, enduring many laps in '06 which have used both lanes. Gorgeous car seems to resist adjustments, causing the Alabamian to lament, "I really don't know what to do with this thing."
After getting into the Valdosta show as an alternate, Tom Myers solidly made the PN field with his Granbury, TX, 736-inch Pontiac.
General consensus indicated the Bobby Booth-driven Baker Brothers '53 Corvette was the best-looking machine on the HMP property. Immaculate Texas car just missed the PX bump with a 4.09/175 best.
All-time nice guy Charles Carpenter barely got his PN '55 Bel-Air down the track until a first-round 4.10/171, which lost out to Burton Auxier by fourteen thousandths of a second.
Prior to his first-round crash, South Carolinian Billy Blackwell was gaining the respect of fellow PX pilots by manhandling the beautiful Harry & David's Logging '97 ZR1 to numerous 4.0s at almost 180 mph. Billy escaped unharmed after multiple hard hits; car status is still unknown.
HMP hero and track record holder (at least until the third car during testing) "Mad Man" Frankie Taylor suffered the anguish of losing first round dash to Mike Neal's holeshot-aided 4.00/182.11 while posting a 3.98/184.43.
Texas 10.5 star Jeff Naiser entered his slick '92 Camaro in PN and qualified with repeated 4.60s at over 163 before first-round drubbing by Randy Weatherford's 4.05/176 blast.
Eddie Ware unleashed the third fastest speed of the event with a brilliant 4.04/188.21 qualifier, but first-round tire shake had the Georgia Willys driver more than "Disturbed."
"Wild, Wild Wes" Johnson pulled multiple 4.20s at over 175 from his NAPA-backed Texas '53 'Vette but missed the PX bump spot.
