PRO EXTREME

Joey Martin driving the ex-Mike Ashley Mustang proved at Houston that he and tuner Chuck Ford evidently will be a force on the ADRL tour. Martin pushed the ‘Dozer Mustang to the No. 2 spot in qualifying with a 3.950/186 blast just a hundredth behind No. 1 qualifier Bil Clanton’s 3.940. Twenty-eight cars attempted to qualify for the 16-car field. Herman “Hermanator” Sheppard was on bump was a stout 4.071 with six drivers recording a three-second time in qualifying.

Perhaps the most impressive qualifying effort was that of Todd Tutterow in his small block Ford-powered, DOT tire-shod, late model Mustang. He ripped off a stellar 3.955/185.34 for the No. 3 spot, but then broke in the first round. What made Tutterow’s performance even more impressive was that he severely wounded a cylinder head on Friday and actually had a head flown in and they repaired the engine Saturday morning. Who says these racers aren't serious professional racers?

his way to a final round match-up against Texas racer Josh Hernandez and his equally famous tuner, Howard Moon. Hernandez and Moon managed just one sub-four-second lap, a 3.989/169.11 in the semis. Hernandez beat Bil Clanton on that lap by a margin of just .007 of a second.

In the final round it was all Martin as he ripped of yet another sub-four-second lap, using a 3.943/185.95 to bury a tire shaking Hernandez. Martin’s first win on the ADRL tour moved him into third in the points chase behind Mike Neal and Hernandez.
