![]() The Barnes 3-stage dry-sump pump is driven off the crank by belt drive. Naturally, all the front drive is custom made because there are no off-the-shelf parts for one-half V8 BB engines. |
![]() The SEFI is electronically managed by a Big Stuff 3 control. It is one of the top SEFI management units available and has made the car extremely consistent each run. A trait driver Chad Voges has had to learn to get used to. |
Chad says he bought the block “right.” (How many other phone calls was R-M going to get looking for one like it a year ago?) Thus a major engine component issue was solved. R-M cylinder head wizard Darren Morgan built the DRCE2 head, and the combo was sent to Eaton Enterprises to be built by chief engine builder Rick Watters.
The SEFI is a combination of off-the-shelf electronic fuel injection control and fuel pump and regulator, and custom intake fabrication by Billingsley. We have respected the team’s request not to show any images of the internals of the sheet metal intake box because of the amount of R&D they have in it – and the fact that it is key to getting the engine to perform as well as it does. It did not work right out of the box, and took lots of effort to sort out. We can imagine air/fuel distribution wasn’t simple to resolve.
We can tell you inside it has four 65-lb/hr,12-ohm injectors that are operating at about 70 percent duty cycle, with 70 psi of regulated fuel pressure from the Aeromotive electric fuel pump. The throttle bodies are from 5.0L Mustangs and have been modified by Billingsley for this application. Total output is around 560HP according to him.
Of course, the SEFI electronics are critical to making this engine combination and fuel injection work, and the team uses one of the best fuel control units available: Big Stuff Gen 3 Pro SEFI. Among its many functions, it electronically adjusts the A/F ratio and keeps the engine consistent. Voges said he has never had such consistency in a race engine, and when they went to look inside the parts after a few races into the season for a minor freshen-up, the engine was running so clean there was no carbon build-up on any of the parts—something he’d not seen before.
![]() We had a great picture of the inside of the hand-made EFI intake manifold showing its injectors and throttle-body throats – but the team requested we not show it. A shame really, it is top notch fabbing work. They have too much R&D seat in it to give it away and we respect that. This once. |
![]() We can show you the stellar work of the hand-made throttle bodies under the intake box and the top of the Reher-Morrison-built DRCE2 head on the left-side of the engine with it’s hand-built exhaust. The throttle bodies are heavily modified Mustang 5.0L ones. |
